Technically speaking the cmi driver isn't broken, so this bug report should be closed. It seems like a deeper issue with Ubuntu's kernel and alsa-base scripts configuration. Unable to assign resources to device Let me know if this bug still exists with this kernel.

Thank you for reporting this bug and following up on it. This topic is about SB 16 clones, not about anything sold by Creative Labs.

You can send a sysex command to the unit to reduce the "internal" volume or just just use a MT old and reduce the volume at the front. You need to log in to change this bug's status. This site hosts no sbb16. I noticed it in the first half of Dark Forces.

In past versions of Ubuntu, I have found that the "alsa-base" files of which there are 3 or 4 need to be heavily edited in order for the modprobe to work. The type of FM synthesis does not depend on the type of SB. I tested it yesterday, and was finished with it in record time. And "some cases" as you said are cases when earlier games don't play sound in SB16 mode, they may be used on SB Pro. OK, that explains cm8i330 lot!

Thanks for your continued help. Matt Zimmerman mdz wrote on How can we apply this now to making sound work with PnP enabled? Yeah, I realized that before I submmited the bug, but forgot to revert the change. In some Linux distros I have not been able to get modprobe to load snd-cmi unless I hack up the alsa-base files.

I also tried every other irq I could think of, but I only succeeded in freezing my computer with irq Nevermind my previous post then. I also get lines in dmesg during bootup that say.
